2 Quick St. Patrick’s Day Art Activities for Kids

With the grass starting to turn green, and our snowdrops popping out of the ground, we’re in the mood for some quick St. Patrick’s Day art fun. But sometimes we only have a half hour and we still want to scratch that creative itch, in a way that doesn’t involve a long cleanup time. That’s when these quick activities come in handy.

It’s Not Easy Being Green

My kids love it when I tell them they can mix the paint colors together. They get this glazed look over their faces like they are wizards with a magic cauldron. So I wanted to create an activity that would not only let kids mix paint, but encourage it in a constructive way.

A paper plate, a little bit of tempera paint, and this handout is all you need.

Squirt a little bit of blue, yellow, black, and white liquid tempera on a paper plate and let kids mix their own hues of green. They’ll be surprised at how many different greens they can make with only a few colors.

Then let kids name their new colors. For younger kids, don’t be afraid to transcribe their sure to be hilarious and creative names.

Big Sparklette really went for botanical colors.

Toddlers can do this activity too. If you don’t want to get out paint, see how many greens they can find in their Crayola box and marvel at the fact that green is not only one color.

Leprechaun Application Form

What if your kids had a chance to apply for the esteemed leprechaun job? They would hide gold, dance a jig, wear a fancy top hat, and slide down the rainbow.

They can apply to be one with this fun leprechaun application. Just print it out, and kids can use anything they want to fill it out – a pencil, colored pencils, crayons, or makers.

There’s a few important questions to answer – such as if they can dance a jig, but then they can have fun drawing themselves as a leprechaun, and give themselves a leprechaun name. My Sparklettes are still unsure if they want to retain their own names, or take on a different one.

When they’re done, they’re going to need to draw the answer to a very important question. Where would they hide their gold?

My Sparklettes decided to hide theirs in a forest, in the hollow of a tree. I’m sure there’s a rainbow involved somewhere, even though it doesn’t show up in their drawing.

They’re also under the impression that we are quite rich. I suppose when they do art every day, eat their favorite foods, and have more cuddles than they can count, they really are.
