It’s no secret – those who love art and collect all the fun supplies also love books! And those who are avid readers dream about bringing the story images in their heads to life on canvas.
Often when we think of elementary art, we think of picture books, and it’s no wonder. Picture books count as works of art in and of themselves!
Novels Up Next
But what about chapter books? At age 8 and up (or thereabouts for earlier or later readers), kids are starting to explore – GASP – books without pictures. And they love these characters just as much as the ones on the pages of picture books.
That means they want to create them.
And this is why we believe in art projects for chapter books too – as well as rich art projects that bring them to life, as well as teach the elements of art and principles of design at the same time.
Each of our bundles includes a chapter book tied to the theme. But we also link other books to our projects when they are a perfect match.
We love to keep an ear out for hot books that kids are loving – and we think you’ll love the list of what we have in store for 2024!
Our aim is to include a mix of chapter and younger grade books, graphic novels, fantasy, mystery, classics – with a diverse range of characters, and locations.
We embrace it all… from Charlotte’s Web to Dungeons and Dragons!
Creating art projects for chapter books can be done in any of the following ways:
- Creating a similar setting
- Drawing a main character
- Brainstorming and painting an alternate ending
- Creating a project inspired by an artist of the country where the book took place
- Creating a comic book or pop art version of a favorite scene
- …and more!

Benefits of LiterARTure!
Chapter books are the next step up from picture books, and kids are already struggling because they want their pictures back.
As we tell kids to create the pictures in their mind, it’s helpful to kids to put those pictures on paper!
Creating art based on chapter books can also:
- Enhance a character study
- Celebrate the end of that book – kids love getting together with friends to throw a book party or to create
- Help with reading comprehension as kids inevitably think about the character, plot, and setting as they create
Doing art projects that go along with novels is truly an extension of language arts!
