This Pride Month Art Project Celebrates the Right for You to Be You!
June is PRIDE month, where LGBTQIA+ communities come together worldwide to celebrate the right to be themselves. Therefore, we’re celebrating the incredible contributions of LGBTQIA+ artists, writers, scientists, and others who have made an incredible impact on the world. It’s one reason we wanted to create an easy, yet vibrant, Pride Month Art Project for kids.
One of these incredible artists is Lisa Congdon. As a self-taught fine artist, illustrator, author, and social justice activist, Lisa often illustrates inspirational quotes using her colorful style. See Lisa’s work, and purchase some of her beautiful and inspiring artwork on her website HERE.
In this Pride Month Art Project, students draw and illustrate the inspirational phrase “Be You” in her style. During this month and all year, let’s recognize that we all need to be true to who we are and appreciate the uniqueness of each other.
What you'll need:
- 12×18 or 9×12 sulphite paper
- Pencil
- Crayon or oil pastel
- Watercolor
- Optional: sparkle gel crayons
Be Proud to Be You!
Sketching Your Words
Encourage students to use any phrase that’s important to them, to highlight the right that everyone has the right to be themselves, and to celebrate our differences and uniqueness.
We chose “Be You” for this sample. The “O” in the middle is used as the sun’s rays, and the Y is used as a figure standing tall and proud.
Sketch the words with pencil. Use capital letters for emphasis, so that your message stands loud and clear.
Write BE nice and tall. Give YOU a wide, outstretched Y, a small O, and a U with a fancy tail.
Draw lines radiating out from the O. Then make these rays closer together when touching the O, and farther apart as they near the edges of the page so that it looks like the sun.
Coloring Your Work
The rainbow symbolizes the diversity of the LBGTQIA+ community and how it comes together to support each other. In this sample, it’s used to color the word BE. Choose the colors that mean something to you.
Press hard with the crayon to get solid color. Because students use watercolor as the background, you want the crayon thick so the color to resists the paint.
Color the O with a vibrant yellow, red-orange close to the yellow and then orange, coloring the rays lighter than the words.
Painting the Background
Go over the rays with sparkle gel crayons, if desired!
Then paint the background a vivid turquoise to let the sun, and you, shine!
