USA Unit Study Through Art | Homeschool Art Curriculum

You’ve decided to teach the 50 States (and U.S. Territories too!) and maybe you’re wondering where to start, what to include, and how to make it a fun learning experience. You know – other than just memorizing the capitals (yes, we’ve all been there!).

And maybe you’ve gotten through eight states only to kind of… be done. (Holding my hand up over here…)

Let’s face it, learning anything where there’s 50 of them (and that doesn’t include the territories) can be a bit daunting.

But what if it wasn’t?

What if it felt rather effortless, and a bit more… fun?

That’s where art comes in. That’s right – a USA Unit Study… through art!

You can choose to learn about a state, or a region, and then create based on what you’ve learned (or like to see some day!)

The one beautiful thing about art is that it helps kids synthesize information. That’s a fancy word for saying that it helps kids retain information in better ways – while having fun.

And then, to top it off, your kids have something to showcase what they learned, to themselves, and family and friends.

But how do you create a USA Unit Study?

We’ve got you – here’s 3 easy steps!

Step One: Find a Sketchbook

First, you’re going to want a sketchbook or drawing notebook. Use what you have, create one by folding and stapling paper, or buy a fresh one, your choice.

Any sketchbook can work - storebought, or just a stack of paper that's stapled!

Step Two: Pick a State or Region and Get Silly!

Pick a state or territory to begin learning about, maybe the one you live in, or one you’re going on vacation to.

Write out a favorite fact about the state or territory (that’s right, art plus language arts!). Next to it, use one of our Silly Drawing Prompts or create your own fun and silly sketch about the state.

Silly drawing prompts get kids creating easily by guiding them on what to draw!

Step Three: Create an Art Project Around What You're Learning

When thinking about a state, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take Michigan, for example.

  • Draw and paint an old car (Detroit)
  • Learn how to draw a cherry with shading (Traverse City)
  • Use cardboard and paint sticks to design your own cereal box (Battle Creek)
  • Use greens to paint a beautiful conifer (the forests of the Upper Peninsula)
  • Paint the Mackinac Bridge (and learn how to pronounce it!)

Where might you find art projects without spending hours online?
