Rainbow Lunar New Year Dragon Art Project

A lunar new year dragon art project using simple supplies

Every 12 years we get to see one of everyone’s favorite zodiac animals – the dragon. My oldest was born in the year of the dragon, so there’s a lot of excitement as it rolls around (and the feeling – yikes – of her growing older!) So of course I wanted to create a lunar new year dragon art project.

Often lunar new year projects are crafty, involving a heavy dose of paper cutting, and we wanted to take things a different way using supplies that you probably already have on hand – crayons and watercolors.

Better yet, we’ve included a drawing guide in the download so your students can easily follow along.

What you'll need:

  • 9×12 white sulphite, mixed-media, or watercolor paper
  • A black Sharpie, crayon, or oil pastel
  • Crayons or oil pastels
  • Watercolors
  • Paintbrush and cup of water

Rainbow Lunar New Year Dragon Art Project How To

Start by drawing the head of the dragon. Remember that Eastern dragons often have horns or antlers, fabulous manes, and long mustaches.

Add a wavy line for the body. Draw a parallel line that joins at the tail end. Add a third parallel line that joins at the tail end.

Separate the body with short curved lines.

Add the legs.

Add clouds in the sky using a swirling pattern.

Color in smaller details using crayons and then use watercolors to paint.

Want to change it up? Use a golden brown to paint the background to make it look like an ancient scroll! Here’s a sample from a 6th grader.
