My house is full of magazines. From subscriptions to magazines that my Sparklettes are done with, to magazines that well-meaning friends have passed on. Instead of tossing them in the recycle bin, here’s 3 fun and easy art projects with magazines.
Giant Color Wheel
Magazines are full of colorful images, and what better way to teach the color wheel to your kids than with a giant one.
Materials:
A large piece of paper, piece of poster board, or an old flattened box
A glue stick
Scissors
Old magazines
Directions
Draw a large circle on the paper, and don’t worry if it’s a little wonky. Then divide it up into six sections.
Identify which color goes in each section on the rim of the circle.
Rip, or cut images with that color out of the magazines and glue it in the circle.
For older kids: Have kids try to place the pictures closer to the analogous colors. For example, plum should go closer to the red, and blue-violet should be closer to the blue section.
Mixed-Up Animal Project
Kids will giggle as they put together an adorably hilarious animal made of animal parts.
Materials
A glue stick or white school glue
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Any color paper
Old magazines
Directions
Have kids look through the magazines for pictures of animals. Let them have fun cobbling together an animal of their own, gluing it down on the paper. Use markers, or what you have on hand, to complete their art.
Collage Bird Nest
This project is perfect for perfecting those cutting skills, as well as teaching how lots of small pieces can make a greater whole.
Materials
White school glue or a gluestick
Scissors
Markers or crayons
Scrap paper (glitter, painted, or scrapbook)
Old magazines
Directions
Cut up magazine pages into narrow strips, approximately 3-4 inches and glue them down into a loose oval near the bottom of the paper. Continue adding strips of paper until it forms a bird’s nest.
Draw a few ovals onto a piece of painted, glitter, or scrap paper for eggs. Kids can make their eggs however big or small that they’d like.
Draw a bird silhouette on the backside of a piece of scrap paper. Painted, glitter, and scrapbook paper all make wonderful choices. Add a beak, and a wing with other colors of paper and attach them with glue.
Use the markers or crayons to decorate the background with flowers, trees, or whatever the child desires, or leave it as is.
