Axolotl Valentine Art Project | Alcohol Markers Lesson

Let’s face it – axolotls are just plain cute. Who wouldn’t want to receive an axolotl valentine? That’s why we created this Axolotl Valentine Art Project.

These unique members of the salamander family are everywhere these days. Not in nature, but on shirts, games, and even legos! Aside from having adorable faces, these guys have features that you have to admire. They can regrow limbs and unlike other salamanders, they do without metamorphosizing!

Their little frilly gills reminded us of lacey valentines, and this project was born!

Have you tried alcohol markers yet? They’re perfect for this project, giving bright colors, layering abilities, and a cheerful look.

So grab what you’ve got and make an axolotl valentine art project. Who will you gift it to this Valentine’s Day?

What you'll need:

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Construction Paper
  • Gluestick
  • Scissors
  • Thick Watercolor or Paint Paper
  • Alcohol Markers
  • Fine-Tip Sharpie
  • White Gel Pen

Axolotl Valentine Art Project Instructions

First, draw your envelope with a pencil and ruler. You’ll draw a rectangle, triangle on top, and lines going in from each corner to create a smaller rectangle.

Next, draw organic ribbon shapes from the middle of the envelope.

To finish the drawing, draw an axolotl head, gills, and arms from the top of the bow ribbons. Add frills around the heart and the gills!

Optional: add flowers! Draw stems and buds coming from behind the axolotl, inside the envelope.

Draw any flower you like on the stems to customize your own card! Add variety by making some flowers shorter and some longer.

Now you’re ready to add color to your axolotl. If you have alcohol markers, grab them. If not, any coloring supply will work.

If using alcohol markers, layer colors to create shadows and depth. Use warm colors for the axolotl, heart, and flowers. Contrast this with green stems and a gray envelope.

Consider writing a message on the back, and gift it to someone special.
