Bottle Up Summer Art Project

Summer is usually here and gone before we know it, isn’t it? Don’t you want to just… bottle it up?

This Bottle Up Summer art project is quick, easy, involves a lot of imagination, and also – it makes kids think – just what does summer mean to me?

When we can get kids connecting their own personal experiences to art, it deepens their connection to art. This is also a great project if you want kids to write their own artist statement – their name, materials used, and what this project means to them.

Fancy bottle, but no fancy supplies

This project can be done with anything you, or the kids, have on hand. If they have a black marker and a coloring medium (crayons, markers, watercolors, gel crayons – even tempera paint sticks), they’re ready to go.

For bottle ideas, make sure to download your FREE Bottle Up Summer Art Project guide below. And remember – you can easily change this project to work with any season. Can you imagine a bottle full of a winter wonderland?

Before giving kids the bottle drawing guide, you might want to start with asking them how many shapes of bottles they can think of? I know when I started envisioning bottles, I immediately thought of something like a mason jar. Then I realized that plastic water bottles and perfume bottles would make pretty fascinating summer bottles as well.

What does summer mean to you?

What would it mean for you to bottle up summer? Would it mean sunshine? Flipflops?

Maybe for those of you reading this, it means mixed drinks and mini-umbrellas – don’t worry, you can make this project too!

First, draw the picture with a black marker, and then use what you have to color it in.

The black marker makes a striking contrast against the bright colors that make up summer – whether it’s a sun, beach scene, or even a bottle full of popsicles.
