Bunnicula Art Project for Kids

Forty years ago Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe inspired a generation of readers and writers, including myself. It was one of the first books I ever read, curled up in the nook of my room. I became lost in the adventures of a dog and a cat trying to find out what was up with this weird looking bunny creature. And why were the veggies losing color? So it was only natural that I had to create a Bunnicula art project this Halloween season.

I love teaching this project to Bunnicula-loving young artists. My heart is always so overjoyed by the response that I had to write it down to bring it to teachers and homeschoolers so they could do it with their own kids and students.

The bunnies I’ve received have been black and white, polka dotted, all purple, and even colored as Pikachu. Watching a friend develop her own projects, and now developing my own, I truly believe that the best projects are those that teach a skill or drawing, and then leave plenty of room for children to add their own spin – their own creativity stamp.

My own kids joined in and created their own version of Bunnicula. My youngest had veggie juice pouring onto the colorless grass. My oldest chose multiple bite marks and even added an owl on her crescent moon.

Even if you only have crayons, or only a black marker, I hope you hop on over for the spooktacular fun!
