A cute watercolor art project full of expressive creatures
Have you ever tried to take a picture of a group of people and you couldn’t get everyone looking the same way, and then some were giving others bunny ears, some were frowning, and some were even closing their eyes?
In this cute watercolor art project full of creatures, that’s exactly what’s happening! Create your expressions and then paint color on top, learning how to fill the space.
Is there one that isn’t behaving? One that’s smiling a little too widely? All you need is a black permanent marker like a Sharpie and some watercolors, and you’re off creating!
This project is perfect for a family member gift, or for Mother’s or Father’s Day too because it’s a fun way to paint the family in a less stressful and more hilarious way!

Creature Family Portrait Art Project
Start by drawing eyes all over the page. Vary the size and shape.
Add antenna as well as a facial expression.
Feel free to experiment (like the outer space eyes on the bottom right!).
Add color by painting watercolor splotches over each one starting at the antennae and painting downward.
Make sure to start at the lower eyes first or you will end up with gaps. You can fix these by adding more eyes or adding more paint and painting downward until you reach the creature below it.
Let dry and add some crayon texture.
Final bit of instruction and add finished project image below.
Which creature do you look the most like?
