Found Object Drawing

Sometimes life tries to knock you down. While we manage to get back up again, it may be time for an easier than usual art project. This Found Object Drawing project is quick and fun!

If you want your kids to challenge their creativity AND pick their things up off the floor, then look no further.

Turn Stuff Into Art

Kids have a lot of stuff.

And they’re not the best at putting that stuff away. So you could do this art exercise with anything, but it’s a great deal of fun if you challenge your kids to only use something on the floor.

Have kids grab one object, or two, and bring them to the art table.

Also bring a piece of paper, and a black marker. That’s it.

Place the object anywhere on the piece of paper, and spend some time imagining the possibilities.

Then start drawing.

Big Sparklette started out fairly simple.

When my older girl started, she used a bowl and created a turtle, a fairly simple thing to see and draw, given the shape of the bowl. I would be surprised if most younger kids didn’t gravitate towards using this as their object.

But I challenged her with her next object. To draw something that didn’t have a humped shell. So she found an old baby sock from her sister’s doll. And this time, she turned the paper this way and that until she finally had this ferocious creature.

A baby sock T-rex is the most terrifying dinosaur in existence.

Adding rocks for the eyes gave it an extra special touch.

There’s More Fish in the Sea

My younger girl went fishy with her own bowl.

Every once in a while she would remove the bowl excitedly, squeal, and put it back, seeing what she was creating and how it changed with the bowl’s absence.

She’s really into the details lately, so this was a perfect opportunity for her to be able to practice them everywhere in an underwater landscape.

Mom Gets a Turn

Of course, adults should get in on this one too.

Looking at a blank page is hard. Looking at a page with just a pair of scissors can be just as hard. But keeping our own minds active and creating is a necessity. And sometimes it can be just the thing to snap us out of our own anxiety and pain, if just for a while.

So I’m presenting to you my scissor-bird. He may not be the fanciest flier in the sky, but he can definitely snap a berry off of a bush in one second flat.
