Gas or Glands? | Multi-Sensory Art Project

Whether you are closing your eyes getting ready to sleep, taking a math test, or simply playing videos games, bad smells can make their move and ruin your day. You truly never know when it will pop up or leak out. So, blame it on the bugs! Let them ponder: is it gas or glands? That’s the age-old question keeping scientists up at night.

In this project, we will take a multi-sensory approach to fart gas. We will imagine what a fart sounds, smells like and looks like. For an extra sensory experience, have students make the sounds associated with the smell they created. For bonus points, they can add their favorite stench – like dirty soccer shin guards – and rub it onto their work.

So grab your markers and the stinkiest thing you can find, and let’s create!

What you'll need:

  • 9×12 Sulphite Paper
  • Sharpie
  • Washable Markers
  • Water cup
  • Fingers

Gas or Glands? Art Project Instructions

Draw the stink bug based on the drawing guide on this page. Add line to show the smell coming out of the glands between the first and second set of legs.

Add color to the stink bug using marker. Consider using rainbow colors for the ultimate color mixing experience. Add some smell secreting out from the glands.

Close your eyes and imagine you are the smell coming out. Make the noise you would hear as you use a spray bottle to disperse the marker, mixing the colors in grossest combinations to create the worst smell possible. Really get into it.

Take it further! Use your fingers to gently swirl the once rainbow the colors into the color of a jaw-dropping, nose-holding, perfectly putrid odor. You know, one your old dog would be proud of.

Think about creative ways you can add scent to your work.

Simple Bad Smell: wipe some cat food on your piece.

Advanced Stench: Volunteer to take out the garbage, taking your art with you. Flip the trash can over and allow the liquid from the bottom of the trash can to drip on to your piece.
