An Easy Valentine's Day Art Project that only uses crayons!
It can be hard to find an easy Valentine’s Day art project that is isn’t Jim Dine. There are lots of painted hearts this time of year, but I wanted to showcase an art supply that everyone has on hand – crayons. And I also wanted to step away from the artist who pops up everywhere this season.
Crayons have a hard time showing up on dark paper – even the most vibrant colors.
Crayola’s new line of construction paper crayons, however, show up brilliantly on black – and they’ve released a “bold and bright” line of construction paper crayons that are even brighter, and come in a wider variety of colors.
Rest assured that if you only have “normal crayons” – you can do this project too. Bust out your crayons and figure out which ones work – or use oil pastels!
And revel a bit in the no-mess.
Although it’s critical that we let kids experiment with a wide variety of mediums, sometimes “just crayons” is just what the doctor ordered.

Ready to get your Heart Art on?
Graffiti Hearts Instructions
Imagine a line snaking down the page. This is the line that you will draw the hearts on. (For our youngest students, let them use a black crayon to draw a line so it just barely shows up!)
Think about your color scheme – are you using warm colors? Cool colors? Forest colors? Or maybe a rainbow! Line up the crayons you’d like to use so you can just grab one and go down the line!
Note: If you’re using regular crayons, some crayons might not show up – test them out by making a swatch of them on the back of the paper and keep the ones that look the best!
Draw a variety of hearts snaking down the page, varying the size and the direction slightly.
Use white to draw a line around each heart, just slightly away from it (don’t trace!).
Use another 2 colors to repeat the lines around the hearts. Some of the hearts won’t have much of an outline because they will be in the middle – that’s okay! It doesn’t have to be perfect.
Next, it’s time to add some bricks!
Add horizontal lines to start the wall. We want this wall to look old, so when drawing the horizontal lines, use the flat portion of the crayon. and don’t draw full lines, leave the lines broken and don’t worry about them being even.
Next, draw a few vertical lines, some going down from a horizontal line, and some going up. Don’t connect the horizontal lines, but leave a space.
Finally, with the crayon on its side, shade in some of the corners randomly, choosing the top left for some, bottom right for others, and so on!
