Earth Day is here, and I’m always torn on what kind of project to bring to others. Do I create one that involves recycled materials? Or something where kids get to create Planet Earth? After a lot of requests from our members for Keith Haring, I took action. Kids will get into action too with this fun and easy Keith Haring Earth Day Art Project.
Haring was inspired by the graffiti art of the New York subway system and it shows in his bright, vibrant colors. His bold lines and action lines make him instantly recognizable at museums, or on t-shirts at the stores.
The figures are easy for kids to grasp and draw, and it’s the perfect way to start figure drawing. Often kids worry about those pesky details, and here they’re only drawing outlines.
This project is perfect for any coloring medium, and it’s remote/virtual friendly. It can also be used for any grade level. Older kids will love looking at his other figures and creating figures of their own.
Ready for discussion on symmetry and asymmetry, on unity and balance? This project teaches that too.
The past few years have been quite a wild ride for many of us, with ups and downs, positives and negatives, and learning to rely on others in new ways to get things done. So this project also had to honor the fact that we are all in it together, even though so many of us are far apart.
