Mitten Mansion Art Project | Winter Art Project for Kids

Get cozy this winter with this mitten art project.

Some people can be found on the slopes, snow and wind in their hair. Others, like me, prefer the cozier aspect of winter. And nothing screams winter like warm, adorable, fluffy mittens.

In Jan Brett’s book The Mitten, animals feel the same pull as us, using the mitten as their home.

In this project, kids get to imagine what their own mitten mansion would look like and include their own patterns and colors to contrast or blend in with the swirling winter landscape of blues and whites.

You don’t need hard to find supplies for this one. Blue and white tempera make up the background, while any construction or sulphite paper can be used with the mittens. Add some crayon touches, and you’re done. It’s perfect for all ages.

What you'll need:

  • 12×18 or 9×12 white sulphite paper
  • 9×12 another color sulphite or construction paper
  • Tempera paint
    • blue
    • white
  • Paintbrush, cup of water, and paper plate or palette
  • Construction paper crayons or oil pastels
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Here's how to create this adorable mitten art project:

Cut off a rectangle to create a square piece of paper. Reserve the cut piece for the mitten fluff.

Mix an equal part of blue and white tempera together to form a medium value. Use this to paint the entire page.

Without out cleaning the brush, paint the lower 1/4 of the paper white for the snow. Keep the line wavy.

Mix white with a small amount of blue to create a light value. Use this color to paint large pine trees in the background, making them almost touch the top of the page.

Mix a dark value by using mostly blue or blue with a touch of white to paint smaller pine trees (like stacks of arrows).

Use white paint to dab dots of snow falling all over the scene and let dry.

Trace your hand, or freehand draw a mitten from any color sulphite or construction paper.

Use any color of crayons to add a window, door, and patterns for the mitten.

Glue down the mitten and add a chimney and walkway.

Add any last touches with crayons such as smoke, or other decorations and get cozy!
