Rainbow Flint Corn | Fall Art Project for Kids

Corn isn’t just for summer picnics or the movie theater! It takes center stage on fall tables as well.

This crop is versatile, and symbolizes many things to different groups of people, including unity, abundance, and fertility.

Every autumn you’ll see corn at the market that isn’t just solid yellow, but the kernals are in a bright variety of colors. This corn is commonly called flint corn, rainbow corn, or glass gem corn (which is a newer variety of rainbow corn).

Over thousands of years, indigenous peoples of the Americas slowly cultivated this corn in a variety of colors.

In this project students will use tempera paint sticks to create a continuous line and then will draw the kernels. Finally they’ll cut out their corn and add the husk.

Grab your supplies and let’s make some colorful corn cobs! (Or, if your child decides to freeze their corn instead, well, you can enjoy that corn next year!)

What you'll need:

  • White and green paper
  • Tempera Paint Sticks
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Rainbow Flint Corn Art Project Instructions

Grab white paper and tempera paint sticks.

Choose a color scheme and use loops of continuous lines to color a large part of your paper.

Using black, draw a line of black rectangles to make the middle row of corn kernals. Add several more rows on each side.

Draw a black line around the rows of kernals, making the top a little narrower than the bottom.

Add contrast to some kernals with a few additional colors than were used in the first step.

Create the husk by drawing wavy lines.

Color them green, adding yellow and black details where desired.
